Post Surgery Breast Care: A Clinical Kit for Cancer
Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico,
wanted to bring down the rate of infection and
complication after discharge for cancer patients.
Communication Science researched the discharge
process and found practices in post surgical care
that were useful for hospital recovery but when
duplicated at home, were the direct cause of
infection and complication.

In the hospital, nurses pin surgical drains
to patients' gowns. But at home, pinned
drains and tubing catch on doorknobs
or furniture and pull out. Patients--now free
to shower--sling drains over their necks,
unknowingly reversing the flow of drainage
and causing infection.
Communication Science invented a
disposable belt bag,
EasyWearTM. Made
of breathable surgeons' gown material, the
sac slides around the belt to the drain exit.
Tabs hold tubing to prevent dangling loops.
Two belt bags in a kit solve the shower
problem: wear one in, change out.
Patients also complained of kinking the
tube when they simply let an arm down.
Communication Science invented a split
pad with a foam bar, the
V-FanTM, to slide
under the exit site and hold up the tube.
